Like it or not Wi-Fi has become the new access layer or “last mile” for broadband operators, just when the fixed network piece has more or less been sorted out. Although the operator’s domain nominally ends still with the modem/router, it effectively now extends beyond to all the tablets, smartphones, laptops and other connected devices in the home. After all, the routers provide the Wi-Fi and increasingly that is the source of customers’ Internet connectivity or even TV service issues.
